CDA 932 bearing bronze, also referred to as high-leaded tin bronze, 932 bronze, C93200, or SAE 660, is a copper alloy. Typically chosen for light-duty applications, it offers excellent machinability, strength, and resistance to wear and corrosion from brine and seawater.

At Sequoia Brass & Copper, we supply a variety of nonferrous metals in bar, plate, and sheet forms, including bronze, brass, and copper alloys. Learn more about the properties and applications of 932 bronze below.

932 Bronze Composition

932 bronze is composed of copper, tin, lead, and zinc with trace amounts of iron, nickel, and antimony. The specific composition is as follows:

  • 81-85% copper
  • 6.3-7.5% tin
  • 6-8% lead
  • 1-4% zinc
  • 1% nickel
  • <1% antimony
  • <1% iron

This unique combination of elements results in various beneficial characteristics. For example, 932 bronze can retain its shape and accommodate journal irregularities and lower lubrication levels when used in machining operations. 932 bearing bronze is also suitable for general industrial use, as its properties comply with SAE J461, SAE J462, ASTM B271, and ASTM B505 standards.

932 Bronze Properties

The unique composition of high-leaded tin bronze delivers various properties, including:

  • Tensile strength: 35,000 PSI
  • Yield strength: 20,000 PSI
  • Elongation: 10% at 2 inches
  • Electrical conductivity rating (at 68° F): 12% of copper
  • Melting point: 1790° F (977° C) liquid and 1570° F (854° C) solid
  • Density: 322 lb/in3 at 68° F (8.91 g/cm3 at 20° C)
  • Specific gravity: 91
  • Modulus of elasticity: 14,500 KSI (100,000 MPa)
  • Specific heat capacity: 090 Btu/lb/°F at 68° F (377.1 J/Kg/°K at 293° K)

The beneficial properties of 932 bearing bronze make it a great option for various fabrication processes, including soldering, machining, brazing, and heat treating. However, it is not ideal for applications requiring welding, particularly gas shielded arc welding, oxyacetylene welding, and coated metal arc welding. The material can be heat treated at 500° F to enhance properties like strength using methods like stress relieving.
